RN to BSN Degree Checklist

Deciding to return to school for an RN to BSN Degree is a complicated decision. The nurse will want the support, advice and assistance of family and friends. It all starts with assessing the need to return to school.

Setting Personal Goals
Returning to school requires a serious commitment of time, money and other resources. The nurse needs to have clear goals for why achieving an RN to BSN degree is beneficial to him or her. A specific goal would be, “I want to manage surgical services for a hospital.” It is clear that the BSN degree is needed to achieve the goal. The goal is both pertinent and practical. Write the goals down where they can be reviewed for inspiration.

Choosing a Traditional versus Online School
Another significant milestone decision is how to obtain the RN to BSN degree. Traditional schools require the nurse go to the college and attend classes in person. The nurse must work his or her schedule around the school schedule. For those who need structure, this is an ideal set up.

Online schools require nurses who are self directed. The nurse must be self motivated and organized. Students have to set aside designated time and space to study. Study and school times are more flexible than with a traditional school, and can be worked around work schedules. It is crucial to be honest with oneself in order to determine the path most likely to lead to success.

Choosing a School
Once the type of institution is set, the nurse can move toward comparing specific universities. Look for accredited schools that have an established nursing school. Look at data such as the nursing program graduation rate and rate of graduates who pass the state boards. Review the teaching staff and their credentials.

Take a look at the schools financial policies. Will the school work with the nurse’s employer? Are there any in- state credits. Do they have a payment plan? It sounds like a lot, but each item is an essential part of choosing a school.

Completing the Application

Most nurses begin by filling out the application. Fill it out thoroughly, do not leave any blanks. Follow directions carefully and ask a friend to review it. Do not forget to include any fees. Ask the admissions office for forms to request previous academic records. This process takes several weeks so send the request in at the same time the application is submitted.

Take any admission tests. Many of these are placement test for English, Mathematics and Composition areas. It is vital to do the best one can on these tests. Potential students should brush up on these subjects prior to testing. Doing well in this process can save money by eliminating several classes the nurse would otherwise have to take.

Going back to school can be fun and exciting. Manage the stress by managing the process. Break up the steps into easy to accomplish tasks.
